Imagine that after a long wait, after hours of anxiety, last minute check-ups, anesthesia, probe, operating room, post-operative recovery, a few more hours of waiting and finally back home with your baby in your arms and a wound that barely lets you breathe.
That's when you ask yourself "What do I do now?", the recovery in the next six weeks will be fundamental for the physical and emotional wellbeing of mom and baby, if you don't know what to do we give you some recommendations.
Physical well-being is fundamental
Once you are back home, it is important that you can rest as much as you can, while it is possible it is important that physically you can regain strength and in less time than you think you can resume your life as you normally do.
We leave you some small recommendations for you to succeed in this recovery:
✔ Make sure you are well in the incision area: check that there are no foci of infection, clean the wound just as the doctor indicated before sending you home, take your treatment punctually and avoid doing force that may affect the healing of the cesarean wound.
✔ Sleep: Although the first few days is a little difficult while the baby adapts to his new life, try to rest, a valuable recommendation is that you sleep at your baby's pace, so you will be less tired for the next feeding.
✔ Comfortable breastfeeding: This recommendation is real, look for the most comfortable and natural way to breastfeed your baby, keep in mind that you can help yourself with a good breastfeeding cushion, a comfortable chair and an adequate space for you and the baby.
✔ Do not hesitate to ask for help: We know you are an excellent mother and that you are capable of anything, but we also know how vulnerable you can be those first days, so do not hesitate to ask for help and above all let yourself be helped.
✔ Take some time for you: Be it taking a good shower, resting or watching a movie, but don't let these first days overwhelm you, you can read a little, go for a short walk or just a good nap, you are on postpartum leave take advantage of it.
✔ Do not deprive yourself of eating what you like the most: Unless it hurts you, or you have some kind of special diet, but in this break called puerperium you have the permission to replenish energy and eat since now you are really going to need all that load of calories to produce milk.
✔ Avoid possible contagions during the puerperium: It is inevitable that family and friends want to come home to meet the new member of the family, but it is your right if you want to restrict visits the first few days, for your well-being and that of the baby, especially if they have recently suffered from a viral infection.
Both the baby and the mother require special care during this time, good hydration, good nutrition, good rest and a lot of understanding, because what has just happened is not just anything, the miracle of life happened to you, enjoy it.
